Does Medicare Cover Dental? What San Diego Seniors Need to Know
This is one of the most common questions Ashley Watson hears from new Medicare enrollees in San Diego — and the answer surprises a lot of people. The short version: Original Medicare covers almost no routine dental care. But there are ways to get dental coverage, and many San Diego residents are already eligible.
What Original Medicare (Parts A & B) Does NOT Cover
Original Medicare Part A and Part B were designed to cover medically necessary services — and the federal government has long classified routine dental care as a non-covered benefit. That means Medicare generally does not pay for:
- Routine dental exams and cleanings
- Fillings and cavity treatment
- Dentures and dental implants
- Tooth extractions (in most cases)
- X-rays taken solely for dental purposes
What Medicare DOES Cover (The Exceptions)
Medicare Part A will cover dental services that are medically necessary as part of another covered procedure. For example:
- Dental exams required before a kidney transplant or heart valve surgery
- Jaw reconstruction following an accidental injury
- Tooth extraction required to prepare for radiation treatment of the jaw
These are narrow exceptions. For most routine dental needs, Medicare Part A and Part B simply won't help.
How to Get Dental Coverage in San Diego
Option 1: Medicare Advantage Plan With Dental Benefits
This is the most popular solution for San Diego residents. Most Medicare Advantage plans in San Diego County include dental benefits as a standard feature — often covering preventive care (cleanings, exams, X-rays) at $0 cost, and providing allowances for more comprehensive services like fillings, extractions, and sometimes implants.
The specifics vary significantly by plan. Some plans offer $500 per year in dental benefits; others offer $2,000 or more. Ashley can help you compare what each plan covers based on the dental care you actually use.
Option 2: Standalone Dental Insurance
If you're on Original Medicare with a Medigap plan and want dental coverage, you can purchase a standalone dental insurance plan. These are separate from Medicare and vary widely in cost and coverage. Premiums typically run $20–$50/month for basic coverage.
Option 3: Dental Savings Plans
Not technically insurance, but dental discount plans let you pay a flat annual fee for reduced rates at participating dentists. These can be a cost-effective option for seniors who need significant dental work and don't want to navigate insurance networks.
What About Dental Coverage for Low-Income Seniors?
If you qualify for both Medicare and Medi-Cal (called "dual eligibility"), you may have access to Medi-Cal dental benefits, which cover a broad range of services including cleanings, fillings, dentures, and extractions. Ashley also helps San Diego County residents apply for Medi-Cal, so if you're not sure whether you qualify, she can help you find out.
What's the Best Plan for Dental in San Diego?
That depends on which dentists you want to keep, how much dental care you expect to need, and your overall Medicare situation. Some of the strongest dental benefits in San Diego are available through plans with $0 monthly premiums — meaning you can get real dental coverage at no extra cost.
Ashley reviews the dental benefits of every available plan in your zip code and can show you exactly what each one covers side by side.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Medicare cover dentures?
Original Medicare does not. Some Medicare Advantage plans include denture coverage, though limits apply. It's worth comparing before you enroll.
Does Medicare cover dental implants?
Original Medicare does not. A growing number of Medicare Advantage plans in San Diego are beginning to offer implant coverage, typically with an annual maximum benefit.
Can I add dental to my current Medicare plan?
If you're on Original Medicare, you'd need to either switch to a Medicare Advantage plan during open enrollment, or purchase a standalone dental plan. During the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7), you can switch plans and gain dental coverage.
