Can You Change Your Medicare Plan After Enrollment?

The good news: yes, you can change your Medicare plan. The important detail: when you can change depends on the type of plan you're on and the time of year. Here's a plain-English guide to your options as a San Diego County resident.

When Can I Change My Medicare Plan?

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) — October 15 to December 7

This is the main window when anyone on Medicare can make changes. During the AEP, you can:

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare
  • Join, switch, or drop a Part D prescription drug plan

Changes made during the AEP take effect January 1 of the following year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period — January 1 to March 31

If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one additional chance each year to switch. Between January 1 and March 31, you can:

  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
  • Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (and join a Part D plan)

You cannot use this window to switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan — only existing Advantage enrollees can make changes.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

Outside of these windows, you can still make changes if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Common qualifying events include:

  • Moving out of your plan's service area
  • Losing employer or union coverage
  • Qualifying for Medi-Cal or Extra Help
  • Your plan leaving the market or losing its Medicare contract
  • Moving into or out of a nursing home or assisted living facility

Can I Switch to a Medicare Supplement Plan Anytime?

This one has an important catch. Switching from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan outside of your original enrollment period is not guaranteed. In most states, insurance companies can require medical underwriting — meaning they can charge you more or deny coverage based on your health history.

California does offer some additional protections, including the annual "Birthday Rule," which gives you a 60-day window each year around your birthday to switch to an equal or lesser Medigap plan with guaranteed acceptance (no health questions). This is a significant benefit that many California Medicare enrollees don't know about.

What If My Doctor Leaves My Plan's Network?

If your primary care physician or a key specialist leaves your Medicare Advantage plan's network mid-year, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to switch plans. This is worth knowing — and worth calling Ashley about immediately if it happens to you.

What's the Easiest Way to Change Plans?

The simplest approach is to work with a local independent Medicare broker in San Diego. Ashley Watson reviews her clients' plans every fall during the Annual Enrollment Period — checking whether their current plan still makes sense given any changes in their health, medications, or coverage needs. If a change is warranted, she handles the comparison and enrollment at no cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times can I change my Medicare plan per year?

Most people can make one change during the AEP and one during the MA Open Enrollment Period — plus additional changes if they qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Can I be denied when switching Medicare plans?

Medicare Advantage plans cannot deny you enrollment during open enrollment periods. Medicare Supplement plans, however, can require medical underwriting outside of your initial 6-month open enrollment window — with some exceptions in California.

Will I have a gap in coverage when I switch?

Changes made during the AEP take effect January 1, so your old plan covers you through December 31. There's typically no gap.
